Anyone with an adult or child’s bicycle in repairable condition is urged to donate their bike to this worthy cause. We do not accept “bikes for parts” or disassembled bikes. We also accept working portable sewing machines and sewing notions (no fabric, please).

P4P/SP collects 3,000 to 5,000 items annually and transfers this material wealth to those in greater need. To date more than 170,000 bicycles and 6,300 sewing machines have been shipped to developing countries in Central America, Africa and Eastern Europe. In these countries the bikes are reconditioned by partner agencies and distributed at low cost to poor working adults. Bikes provide reliable transportation for commuting to work, transporting product to market, and provide greater mobility accessing health care and other services. Sewing machine shipments help initiate educational programs and generate income opportunities that may otherwise remain out of reach for many people. Steady employment for adults is vital to the development and success of struggling communities.

We will be flushing fire hydrants from 11:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. beginning on Tuesday, August 18th. This routine maintenance removes naturally occurring sediment from water mains, improves water quality and flow, and helps ensure hydrants are working properly. See the flushing routes at the end of this message.

During and shortly after flushing, residents may experience temporary low water pressure or discolored water. This is normal and does not usually indicate a problem with water safety.

What residents should do

Avoid doing laundry or running dishwashers during flushing hours, as discolored water may stain clothing or dishes.

If your water is discolored afterward, remove the aerator or screen from a cold-water faucet—preferably a bathtub, utility sink or the faucet closest to where water enters your home.

Run cold water for 5–15 minutes, or until it becomes clear. Avoid running hot water first, as this may draw sediment into your water heater.

Rinse faucet aerators and screens to remove any trapped sediment before reinstalling them.

Check household water filters after the water is clear. Replace disposable filters if they appear discolored, clogged or have reduced flow. Clean reusable filters according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

If you use a refrigerator water dispenser or ice maker, flush the dispenser according to the manufacturer’s directions and discard the first batch or two of ice made after flushing.

If sediment entered your toilet tank, allow the water to clear and then flush the toilet once or twice.

If discoloration or low pressure continues after you have flushed your cold-water lines, please contact the Borough office at 610-268-8501. The office opens at 7 am.

Thank you for your patience while we complete this important maintenance.

🌞 SUMMER SAFETY REMINDER

Water Conservation • Fire Safety • Fireworks Safety

Help Keep Avondale Borough Safe This Summer

Dry weather increases the risk of drought, wildfires, and water shortages. Every resident can help protect our community by conserving water and using extra caution with outdoor activities.

💧 Conserve Water

Simple steps can make a big difference.

Water lawns and gardens only when necessary.

Water early in the morning or late in the evening to reduce evaporation.

Repair leaking faucets, toilets, and hoses.

Run dishwashers and washing machines only with full loads.

Turn off the water while brushing your teeth or washing your vehicle.

Sweep sidewalks and driveways instead of using a hose.

Conserving water helps ensure an adequate water supply for residents and emergency services.

🔥 Fire Safety During Dry Conditions

Even if a formal burn ban has not been issued, dry vegetation can ignite quickly.

Please remember:

Follow all Borough regulations regarding open burning.

Never leave a fire unattended.

Properly extinguish fire pits, grills, and campfires before leaving them.

Dispose of cigarettes and smoking materials safely—never toss them onto the ground or from a vehicle.

Keep combustible materials away from grills and outdoor cooking equipment.

Report any signs of wildfire or uncontrolled outdoor fires immediately by calling 911.

🎆 Fireworks Safety

Fireworks can quickly start fires during dry weather.

If you choose to use consumer fireworks:

Follow all Pennsylvania laws regarding consumer fireworks.

Use fireworks only in a safe, open area away from homes, vehicles, trees, dry grass, and other combustible materials.

Never allow young children to handle fireworks.

Keep a bucket of water or a garden hose nearby.

Never relight malfunctioning fireworks.

Dispose of used fireworks only after they have cooled completely and been soaked with water.

Be considerate of your neighbors, pets, veterans, and those sensitive to loud noises.

Always call 911 immediately if a fire starts or someone is injured.

Stay Informed

The Borough will continue to share important updates regarding drought conditions, fire safety, and other emergency information through our website and Facebook page.
